This was a historic beautiful hotel in a nice neighborhood. The rooms were nice with large bathrooms and a balcony (but you couldn't use it!). The rooms ran a little warm but the windows could be opened for cooler air. The staff, music and grounds all added to the ambiance. Breakfast was a Chinese/western mix with a decent selection. Internet was an issue here - it had connections for laptops that was very slow, but no wifi at all. This was difficult to work with, though in various parts of the hotel you could pick up a random hot spot. Location was great - close walking distance to restaurants and bars/clubs. Fairly close to a metro stop. Recommended so long as the internet will not be a huge issue for you.

My wife and I stayed here as part of a wendy wu tour of china . we stayed for 3 nights and found it a very comfortable place to stay. Breakfast was a mix of some western food and some Chinese, all very tastey. Hotel is set in some some lovely grounds complete with a colourful , musical water fountains in the evenings.Staf all very helpful even seeing us across the road to get our coach. Easy to get to get lost around the maze of small streets in the area of the hotel so make sure you have your keycard with you to show to locals etc.

Rooms were clean and tidy. Air con was off so room temperature didn't go below 26 degrees. Apparently it is an energy saving initiative to turn air con off from October. Good firm mattress which provided a good nights sleep. Breakfast was lovely with a good choice of styles. If you are a coffee drinker then be prepared to queue as there is only a single coffee making machine. The bar here was a let down as they had very little in. Even the local beer ran out 2nd night in. One surprise was that there were 3 pin sockets in the room. Stayed here as part of a Wendy Wu tour for a couple of nights so didn't get to use any other facilities.

This was booked as part of our Wendy Wu tour and it was nice but not outstanding. The rooms were large and comfortable. Breakfast was a bit chaotic and on our first morning there, we didn't find a clean place setting. The bar was a bit disappointing but right along the streets is a lovely outdoor bar. The entrance to the hotel is stunning and very welcoming but this wasn't the best hotel we stayed in in China.

The An Ting Villa Hotel, Shanghai was our last, and best, hotel stay on a great 16-day, Wendy Wu, "Wonders of China" itinerary (September 15-30, 2013). The hotel is well appointed and comfortable, with a quiet, French Concession location. A 30-minute drive from Shanghai city canter, the An Ting Villa Hotel is within easy walking distance of a fine park facility and ample mall shopping. The breakfast buffet was adequate, however, the individual-cup coffee maker, while offering a nice selection of drinks, created something of a log jam (reminiscent of the infamous "toast lines"). Our only complaint: the restaurant staff was rather aloof and inattentive for breakfast service.

Stayed here for 3 nights. It is about half an hour by road from Shanghai city centre. It's located in lovely grounds. Breakfast has a good variety of food. Bedroom and bathroom satisfactory although attention should be paid to remedying mould in bathroom. The drawback is the lack of English language skills of the staff. If it hopes to attract international customers, staff must be able to communicate. Tree-lined environs attractive because it's situated in a former concession area.

This was the first hotel on a 2 week Wendy Wu tour of China. Better than we were expecting, it is in a delightful setting and is well maintained with friendly staff who in spite of a lack of English managed to make us feel welcome. Our time in Shanghai was occupied by the tour but we did have tome to walk to the nearby park which was very pleasant. The only meals we had in the hotel were breakfast which was a mixture of Western and Chinese food, plentiful and tasty.

We stayed for four days and held corporate training programmes. Service was great in the restaurant. Less so in the bar and reception but okay. Food was wonderful. Rooms lovely. Would definitely recommend it.

We spent two nights at the Anting Villa Hotel, Shanghai at the start of our two week sightseeing trip with Wendy Wu Tours. As first time visitors to mainland China, arriving in Shanghai was a bit of an eye opener - despite having read about it and seen images of the futuristic cityscape with its glass skyscrapers, monorails and motorways, we were completely blown away by the sheer scale and contemporary feel of the place. So we were surprised when we arrived at the Anting Villa Hotel, looking quaint and colonial, standing elegantly in its own gardens amongst the surrounding hustle and bustle of Shanghai. As access to the hotel is via a side street there was no disturbance from traffic and it was just a couple of minutes walk to the local bars, restaurants and convenience stores - as we enjoy a bit of the local nightlife we found it to be ideal. Service within the hotel was efficient and helpful even though very little English is spoken by anyone with the exception of front line staff. Our room was fairly large with all the usual mod-cons including fridge, safe, internet access, tea/coffee and TV (only CNN in English). There is a large balcony to the room although access to it was locked - it looked as though it was shared with the neighbouring room. The bathroom was modern and very clean. Breakfast was a selection of Chinese dishes and one or two more familiar western style foods such as scrambled eggs or fresh fruit. Seating was arranged around several large circular tables so it was always necessary to just find a couple of seats amongst the other guests, a lot of whom were also on a tour as well, so it wasn't too bad. The Anting Villa Hotel turned out to be a good base for our stay in Shanghai but as our daytime excursions were already organised as part of our tour, we couldn't really comment on its location for access to public transport.

We were on our first visit to China and arrived in Shanghai, after a delayed flight, to be greeted at Pudong Airport with rain, fog, smog and darkness although it was only about 6:00 pm. This made us think "what are we doing here?" We were transferred by taxi to the Anting Villa Hotel, where we were staying. On arrival after about an hour, we were made to feel very welcome and our opinion of Shanghai quickly changed. The hotel is situated in a quiet area and we were given a large room which had every facility often lacking in some hotels. These included free Internet access from our room and electric sockets to suit seemingly any appliance without the use of adaptors, even a UK socket that I have seen only rarely in hotels overseas. Despite our late arrival, we were able to get a hot meal in the hotel's restaurant and all the staff were charming. We had a good night's sleep in a bed that did not seem to be as hard as those we had been warned about in China. The breakfast offered was a mixture of western and Chinese. On reflection after we had returned to the UK, that in the Anting Villa was better for the western palate than the other hotels we stayed in during our tour of China. The hotel was situated in pleasant gardens and was generally clean, comfortable and well looked after. We were happy that we stayed here for our first days in China.
